Clinical Nurse Specialist – Critical Care – Neonatal ICU

Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an expert clinician who may practice in a specialty area with expertise in teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, management and systems improvement. The clinical nurse specialist influences outcomes by providing expert consultation to all care providers and by implementing improvements in health care delivery systems.

  • Master's Degree from a clinical nurse specialist program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) OR

Responsible For

1. Clinical Expertise & Patient Care

  • Provide advanced clinical nursing care for critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Serve as a resource and consultant for neonatal critical care nursing staff.
  • Implement and oversee evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.

2. Education & Mentorship

  • Develop and deliver education programs for NICU nurses and healthcare teams.
  • Mentor and support nurses, students, and new staff in neonatal critical care.
  • Promote professional development and continuous learning among NICU staff.

3. Leadership & Collaboration

  • Work with physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams to enhance neonatal care.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives within the NICU to optimize patient safety and care efficiency.
  • Participate in policy development and ensure adherence to best practices in neonatal care.

4. Research & Evidence-Based Practice

  • Conduct research and data analysis to advance neonatal critical care.
  • Implement new protocols and interventions based on clinical evidence.
  • Contribute to hospital-wide initiatives focused on improving neonatal care standards.

5. Systems Improvement & Advocacy

  • Evaluate and enhance NICU workflows to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Serve as an advocate for patient- and family-centered care in the NICU.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, and national neonatal care guidelines.

This role is critical for advancing neonatal nursing practices, enhancing patient care, and driving improvements in NICU settings.
