RN – Thoracic Vascular IMCU

Overview

A thoracic vascular nurse is primarily responsible for providing specialized care to patients with conditions affecting the blood vessels in the chest area, including pre and post-operative care for thoracic vascular surgeries, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, educating patients about their condition, and managing complications that may arise; they often work closely with thoracic surgeons and other healthcare professionals.

Responsible For
Key responsibilities of a thoracic vascular nurse may include: Patient assessment and monitoring:
  • Performing thorough assessments of patients with thoracic vascular issues, including vital signs, wound healing, and potential complications.
  • Monitoring cardiac rhythms and other relevant data using telemetry and other monitoring equipment.
  • Identifying and reporting any changes in patient condition to the healthcare team promptly.
Preoperative care:
  • Preparing patients for thoracic vascular surgeries by reviewing medical history, obtaining informed consent, and educating them about the procedure and recovery process.
  • Managing pre-operative medications and necessary interventions.
Postoperative care:
  • Providing intensive monitoring and care immediately following thoracic vascular surgery, including pain management, fluid management, and wound care.
  • Identifying and managing potential complications such as bleeding, infection, and pulmonary complications.
Medication administration:
  • Administering prescribed medications, including anticoagulants, pain medications, and other necessary medications according to the physician's orders.
Patient education:
  • Educating patients about their thoracic vascular condition, including risk factors, lifestyle modifications, and post-operative care instructions.
  • Providing support and counseling to patients and their families regarding their diagnosis and treatment plan.
Collaboration with the healthcare team:
  • Working closely with thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicating patient status updates and any concerns to the healthcare team.
Wound care management:
  • Assessing and managing surgical wounds, including dressing changes and monitoring for signs of infection.
Advanced procedures (depending on certification and practice setting):
  • Performing vascular access procedures, such as placing central venous catheters or peripheral intravenous catheters.
  • Assisting with diagnostic procedures like angiography or ultrasound-guided interventions.
Additional Requirements
  • 1 year of Nursing experience.
